Suzuki Mehran remained the most favourite family car in the Pakistani market until Suzuki ceased its production in 2019. From the year 1988 to 2019, Mehran was the most hot-selling car in Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of Mehran cars are running on the roads out there.
We did some research to find out how many Suzuki Mehran cars were sold within this period. Here’s an in-depth study regarding the Suzuki Mehran units sold from 2006 to 2018.
In 2018, Suzuki Mehran car sales in Pakistan reached 46,221 units, marking an increase from the previous year’s 37,933 units in 2017. The data for Suzuki Mehran car sales is updated annually and spans from June 1999 to 2018, with a total of 20 observations.
Throughout this period, the average annual sales were 29,697.5 units. The highest recorded sales were in 2018, while the lowest were in 2001 at 5,169 units. We have drawn this data from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association.

- Despite fluctuations, there seems to be an overall increasing trend in Suzuki Mehran car sales over the years. In 2001, only 5,169 Mehran cars were sold in Pakistan whereas in 2017 these numbers increased up to 37,933 units.
Why Suzuki Mehran Was the Most Favorite Car of Pakistan?
The Mehran’s maintenance costs were relatively low, making it stand out with a higher resale value compared to many other vehicles. Despite its outdated design, the car continued to be in high demand and was among the best 660cc cars in Pakistan. In September 2018, Pak Suzuki reported selling 47,199 units in the country, outperforming other locally assembled cars.
By February 2019, Pak Suzuki had raised prices to their maximum, setting the retail price for the basic variant “VX” at PKR 825,000, offering it in three colours: White, Silky Silver, and Graphite Grey.
Why Mehran Was Sold for 8.25 Lacs?
The Mehran lacked distinctive design features or head-turning characteristics; it was a straightforward car designed for everyday use by the average citizen.
Its quick market success was attributed to its affordability. Not only did the Mehran come with a low price tag, but it also boasted the lowest maintenance and parts costs, contributing to its impressive resale value.
Many people experienced their first ownership of a four-wheeler with the Mehran, thanks to its cost-effectiveness. The car facilitated an easy and affordable transition from two wheels to four for numerous individuals.
In terms of fuel economy, there isn’t a fixed figure that universally applies. Different units of the vehicle reported varying statistics. Some users claimed a mileage of 13 km/L in the city and 18 on the highway, while others mentioned 16 km/L in the city and 20 on the highway.
Despite the variability, Mehran’s fuel economy remained commendable when compared to other cars in the market.
When the Mehran was introduced 32 years ago at Rs. 90,000, its last retail price for the VX variant in February 2019 had soared to Rs. 825,000. This marked an astonishing 817% price increase over its lifespan.
Despite the gradual but consistent rise in price, the Mehran retained its popularity and remained a sought-after vehicle throughout most of its production years.
The question now lies in the performance of its successor, the Suzuki Alto, in the long run. Only time will reveal how the Suzuki Alto fares in terms of public reception and demand.
